Recently I had the opportunity to interview fitness competitor and model Amy D. Pitre and get her opinion on a variety of fitness tips, nutrition strategies and how to stay motivated.

Q: What inspired or motivated you to continue to pursue fitness the way you have?

Amy: I have loved exercise and physical sports since I was young. The only period of time I was not in the gym was when I had several undiagnosed illnesses in a span of about 5 years.

After we figured out what was going on with me, I got back into the gym and vowed to listen closely to my body and never lose control of my health again. That was 4 years ago.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who’s struggling to stay motivated, keep positive and stick to a proper nutrition and exercise program, especially someone who may not have a positive role model around?

After all, most of us are surrounded every day by a lot more negativity than we are positive people. It can be tough to break away from that.

Amy: One important thing I see as a Weight Loss Coach is that willpower lasts roughly 6 weeks. During this time, there must be a continuous effort to change the core values of eating and exercise into a lifestyle of health and fitness.
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, ask everyone questions, read as much as you can…And get moving!

Q: One thing I’d like for you to address because I feel it’s a big one with women, is weight training. Even nowadays, a lot of women shy away from weight training because they don’t want to look like Arnold. If they train at all, it’s with the tiny pink weights and they never even break a sweat.

That’s a weight trained body! Hit the weights ladies!

Amy: Would you prefer to be skinny with a flat or no tush? Or lean with curves and a nice round tush?

Bottom line is, lean, tone, strong bodies are in…..

Q: You’ve developed a gorgeous, sexy, lean hard body and you couldn’t have done it without weights. What do you say to these women to get them to not just train with weights but train hard and make it an important part of their overall program?

Amy: Training hard and building your body the way you want it does a lot more for women than a great body. It gives them empowerment, strength, self-sufficiency, confidence…I could go on and on!

Q: What’s the biggest mistake you made when you started and how did you correct it?

Amy: I found that diet is such an important part of the whole picture. I found people to help that knew my goals and were educated in this area.

Q: What do you think is the most important thing or skill you’ve learned with regard to health and fitness?

Amy: The most important skill I’ve learned is how to read my body and give it what it needs. My body is a fabulous machine, I love the way it operates these days.

Q: What are some common pitfalls you feel people can stumble upon and how do you help them avoid these obstacles?

Amy: Common pitfalls I see are not following healthy eating, or procrastination. Also, getting a really good physical… including blood sugar, thyroid, hormones, etc…. These are some things that can unknowingly throw off all your hard work. Find out early, correct it, move on.

Q: Moving forward and knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently with your own journey, if anything?

Amy: I would have started healthy eating a lot sooner!

Q: The most common excuse I hear from people who don’t eat right or train is that they don’t have the time.

Amy: That’s a cop-out. There are many competitors out there with full time jobs, sometimes two…And families…And they still make it to the stage and knock it out!

I really believe those that claim there is no time really just need some guidance from good sources. Then they will see it’s possible for anyone!

Q: What advice do you have for people who use ‘lack of time’ as an excuse to eat poorly and avoid exercise?

Amy: I always tell people this: “You’re going out of your way to get the food, right? You’re putting the food into your mouth yourself, right? Why don’t you put the right foods into your body? ”

Again, it’s about choices, and as a Life Coach, I also realize some of it is emotional…..So I work with them on overcoming the emotional obstacles.

Q: What’s a typical day for you when it comes to training and nutrition?

Amy: I love intense morning cardio, really kicks off my day! I prepare my meals every 3 days, so I have meal with me at all times to fuel my body every 3 hours. I hit my weight training routine in the late afternoon/early evenings.

I need the weight training to ground myself after an intense day of operating my companies, counseling clients, and running a household. Getting to bed at the same time every night is so important to me. I love to sleep!

Q: How are you able to consistently fit them into your busy schedule?

Amy: It’s a way of life for me now. Training and nutrition are integrated into my schedule…. I believe my health and fitness directly affect the success of companies.

Q: What do you think are the keys to becoming successful, whether it’s competing or losing 15 pounds of fat?

Amy: Exercise consistency & knowledge of your body & diet. No excuses. Work hard now and you won’t be looking back with regrets, instead you’ll be looking at your fabulous new bikini!!!!

Q: What’s one of the things you find most challenging about what you do?

Amy: I find the most challenging is not being able to be in bars or restaurants without being tempted. When your lifestyle changes, you begin to realize how much society relies on social eating and drinking. I’m from Southern Louisiana & Central Texas. I still haven’t gotten that part under control yet. Lol!

Q: What are your future plans?

Amy: Oh man, I have so many! Right now I’m working on opening a manufacturing facility here in Austin, Texas for my lines of swimwear… One being SugarBaby Swimwear.

I have just completed my NLP Master Life Coaching programs (Neuro-Linguistic Programming..) and am working towards my Hypnotherapy certifications. I’d like to write a couple Self-Help books in 2011.

I’m also fascinated with Quantum Physics, Energy Healing….and, oh, working on my Helicopter Pilot license beginning of 2011…… And I suppose whatever else pops into my head & I can find the time for, I’m all over it!
