First off, Kimberly, I want to say congratulations on your success!.
Q: So what inspired or motivated you to pursue fitness the way you have?
Kimberly: I have actually been modeling professionally since the age of 7.
When I was younger doing fashion modeling at 105 pounds and at 5′11″ you can say that I did not exactly lead a healthy lifestyle.
It was not until I got much older that I decided I could no longer ignore the signals my body were giving me.
Being chronically fatigued and always getting sick because my immune system was a mess I knew it was time to make a drastic change.
I knew how to workout, I played Division 1 basketball in college, but I never really worked out hard enough to put on any “real” muscle.
As I got older and moved away from fashion modeling, I began to explore other avenues in which to make myself more marketable.
So, I got myself back into the gym and started lifting weights. I noticed that I could put on muscle quite easily and it became almost like an addiction.
My body was changing and I could feel myself getting stronger, having more energy, and this to me was the ultimate high.
Along with this metamorphosis came the diet change. This was very scary in the beginning.
I too, like many women, fell victim to the idea that the more you eat the fatter you will get. When in reality this is the exact opposite. Have you ever heard the term “skinny fat?” Well that was me!
I learned that by feeding my body every 2 1/2 to 3 hours the right amounts of protein and carbs, my body became a metabolic furnace.
My metabolism was working at an all time high, I became leaner and more defined and I felt good!! I was finally feeding my muscles the necessary fuel in order for them to thrive and grow.
I started to make great gains in the gym and I loved the way I looked. I was hooked and I have never looked back.
I now had a new mission, to be the best possible role model to men and women alike, to inspire and motivate them to living a healthier lifestyle.
Q: People who have a lot of weight to lose really struggle with motivation.
All they can think about is losing 30, 50, 70 pounds or more and how long it’s going to take and they want all the results TODAY!
You don’t seem to have any trouble at all with the mental part of getting in great shape.
What advice can you give to our readers to help them focus on smaller goals and stick to their plan with getting frustrated and quitting?
Kimberly: I always try to tell people that there is no magic pill, and certainly no quick fix or fad diet that is going to miraculously transform your body in a short period of time.
Just blood sweat and tears and in the end it is so damn worth it.
The best advice I can give someone is to concentrate on the long term instead of the short term.
The long term being living a longer, healthier, more productive existence versus the short term being long grueling workouts, and sore muscles, and sweaty days at the gym doing cadio!
By staying focused on your goals you will eventually lead a life where you will ultimately have more energy, improved immune function, and decreased levels of stress.

I think that once someone begins to see their body beginning to transform and the results are more concrete and visible then the their whole frame of mind changes.
So I encourage men and women to stay focused on the prize right from the start and the results will come in due time.
Q: One thing I’d like for you to address because I feel it’s a big one with women, is weight training.
Even nowadays, a lot of women shy away from weight training because they don’t want to look like Arnold.
If they train at all, it’s with the tiny pink weights and they never even break a sweat.
You’ve developed a gorgeous, sexy, lean hard body and you couldn’t have done it without weights.
What do you say to these women to get them to not just train with weights but train hard and make it an important part of their overall program?
Kimberly: I feel that all women should incorporate weight training into their fitness program.
Women need to be educated in regards to their own genetic makeup and how weight lifting affects our bodies.
As women we are not genetically equipped the same way men are. Our bodies cannot manufacture as much muscle mass due to our differing hormone levels and lack of testosterone.
So I encourage every woman to lift and over time go heavy!!!
Each woman has her own ideal of how she wants her body to look. Each person’s goal varies whether she just wants to tone up or put on large amounts of muscle to compete.
In either scenario what weight you lift and how heavy will determine the outcome.
Personally, I have squatted 360 pounds and in no way do my legs resemble that of any male professional body builder I know of!
All I do know are the extreme health benefits associated with weight lifting. As women our bodies are more prone to storing fat. Well ladies muscle burns fat!
Weight lifting also builds stronger bone density, helping prevent osteoporosis, improves your attitude and fights of depression. You will be physically stronger and less prone to injury.
Ladies, by lifting you reduce your risk of diabetes and how the body processes sugar and you will reduce your risk of heart disease especially with the addition of cardio conditioning, and overall you will gain strength without the bulk!
Only beautiful muscle tone and definition leading to that gorgeous fit physique we all dream of.
With all of the positive aspects of weight training why wouldn’t you want to pick up a set of dumbbells?
Q: What’s the biggest mistake you made when you started and how did you correct it?
Kimberly: There are actually two mistakes I have made when I started out on my fitness journey, the first was my diet.
Although I ate good food, I was eating too many carbs and not enough protein.
It was not until I educated myself on the proper ways to incorporate carb and protein ratios and serving sizes.
The second was in regards to my training. Although I was going to the gym six days a week lifting weights and performing my cardio exercises, I began to plateau.
I found I was actually overdoing the cardio and actually burning my muscle! It was through trial and error and a good personal trainer that I made the appropriate changes that were necessary for me to reach my goals.
I learned how to challenge my muscles by switching up my weight training routines weekly and wearing a heart monitor to track my heart rate to avoid burning my muscles during cardio.
These I think are common mistakes people make.
The biggest thing for me is to help others from the start to educate them so that they don’t make those same mistakes and they can reach their goals quicker!
Q: What do you think is the most important thing or skill you’ve learned with regard to health and fitness?
Kimberly: The most important thing I learned through health and fitness is that diet and exercise go hand and hand. You cannot do one without the other, at least if you want to get results.
I see so many people in the gym who go everyday like myself train the same amount of time and workout just as hard. What is the difference you ask?
Well after seven months in the gym they look the exact same as they did as the day they started.
Why you ask? Because they don’t follow a healthy diet!
Some people actually think that if they put two hours a day in the gym they can go home and eat whatever they want. WRONG!!!!

If you want to see true results and a significant change the two must go hand in hand.
Q: What are some common pitfalls you feel people can stumble upon and how would you help them avoid these obstacles?
Kimberly: The common pitfall facing most people today I feel is staying on a proper diet and consistency. I feel the best way to avoid this is through positive thinking.
You need to keep things in perspective. Make your health, not appearance, your weight management priority.
Avoid negative self-talk, affirm that you can change your lifestyle, you have the ultimate control. At the same time avoid Fad Diets, they just don’t work!
Avoid emotional eating, food never solves a problem and it usually just contributes to a cycle of guilt and low self-esteem resulting in over eating.
Allow yourself a cheat meal every now and then.
Just because you are changing your food choices does not mean a lifetime of dessert damnation! We all need to live a little!:)
Q: Moving forward and knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently with your own journey, if anything?
Kimberly: In my own journey I don’t have any real regrets, I love my life and I live it to the fullest every single day.
I am truly blessed and grateful for the choices I have made and the opportunities I have had to be able to reach out and help others in their own fitness struggles.
I am just happy to have the opportunity to help others avoid making the same mistakes I made so that their goals become a reality much quicker.
That is what keeps me motivated and alive. In a small way I feel like i am contributing.
Q: The most common excuse I hear from people who don’t eat right or train is that they don’t have the time.
What advice do you have for people who use ‘lack of time’ as an excuse to eat poorly and avoid exercise?
Kimberly: This is a very common excuse indeed! Time? You don’t have the time?
Well by not taking care of yourself you are actually decreasing the “time” you have on this earth!
So many of us get caught up in our jobs and our paychecks.
What can I buy or have now, and quickly can I get it that we are actually putting more emphasis and value on materialistic things than our own life.
I am a firm believer that if you don’t have your health you have nothing.
Everyone can find that one hour in the day to make a difference. To allow that time for you and you only.
To block out all the stresses of everyday life and focus on the most important thing in this world – “you!”
As a Professional Fitness Model, mom of two boys, wife, homemaker, and figure competitor, I live a pretty hectic lifestyle. But the key here is balance.
I balance my job, my children, my household, hockey practice, husband, school activities, my competitions, supplement company demos, modeling and on and on are you beginning to see the picture?
I still manage to get to the gym and stay true to the woman I am and I don’t let my everyday duties take over my life, I take over my everyday duties.
This allows me to maintain my identity, and maintain my health. I am a better mom, wife, competitor and most importantly a better human being for doing so.
I have but one life and I am going to live it to me there are no excuses, period.
Q: Do you have any fitness tips and tricks you’ve learned that you’d like to share?
Kimberly: My overall fitness tip to someone starting out would be to stay in a positive frame of mind. There will be days when you get overwhelmed because you want the results to come quicker.
You may get frustrated and have days where you feel like giving up. Next you’re eating banana cream pie lying on the coach watching tv feeling sorry for yourself. It’s okay!
We all have those days, but ultimately it is your choice to get back into that positive frame of mind.
Tomorrow is another day and you have the control, no one else, just you.
Find that desire within yourself, imagine what you want to achieve, picture yourself doing it.
I always tell people if you believe you will achieve, I live by those words. Remember why you are doing this.
Q: What’s a typical day for you when it comes to training and nutrition? Favorite body part? Food?
Kimberly: As far as my nutrition goes I eat clean year round. I never know what I will be doing next.
Whether its a photo shoot or my next competition I feel it is less stressful to always be in top condition.
If I am not competing my calories are usually higher but I still eat a very clean diet with emphasis on carbs such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains nuts and my proteins which are lean meats, chicken and fish.
I do not consume sugar, caffeine, alcohol, or anything with preservatives.
I prepare all of my meals in advance so it is easy and convenient for me since I eat every 2 1/2 hours.
Coupled with a sound supplement protocol which I adhere to religiously my nutritional needs are very scheduled and it has become a natural part of my everyday life.
My training also differs depending if I am competing or not. During the off season I train two hours a day focusing mainly on lifting heavy for the duration of the workout.
Currently I am looking to put on more muscle mass so my lifting is heavy, my calories are up and my cardio is decreased to 30 minutes three times per week.
I train six days a week with one day off for rest. During competition time I train 6 to 7 days a week with double sessions totaling 6 hours a day.
Some may say that is extreme, but I know my body and how it responds. When you’re as driven and determined as I am you go in the gym and give 110% everyday. I do not train for second place.
My favorite body parts to train would be back and biceps. My favorite food is salmon. I eat it everyday!
Q: How are you able to consistently fit them into your busy schedule?
Kimberly: I fit these things into my busy schedule because it is what I do. It is my passion.
I am extremely organized and I keep dry erase boards at home with all of my supplements, meals and workouts.
I have another board that tells me my activities for the day both for myself and my family. When you have a busy life good organizational skills are key.
This helps you to stay on track , be focused and stay positive. It is second nature to me because I feel that this is what I was meant to do.
Q: What do you think are the keys to becoming successful, whether it’s competing or losing 15 pounds of fat?
Kimberly: The key to becoming successful is through positive thinking and believing in yourself.
No matter how many times you may stumble or feel like you do not have it in you to succeed remind yourself of all the reasons you made the decision to live healthier in the first place, get right back up and push forward.
Never say never, because the only one who can keep you from achieving your goals is yourself.
Learn to appreciate your successes no matter how big or small and realize that through those achievements you are a better person now than you were the day before.
Q: What’s one of the things you find most challenging about what you do?
Kimberly: The thing that I find most challenging about what I do has to do with competing. Throughout my 12 weeks of contest prep, I diet and train like a well oiled machine.
I go through the routine day in day out, giving it my very best pushing through the pain, the grueling workouts and the never ending cycles of chicken and brown rice!:)
I feel empowered as I see my body transform right before my eyes, I see the progress and I am in complete control.
This is very empowering until I step up on to that stage. Its showtime and any control that I felt I had over those twelve weeks suddenly is gone!
That is the part I find most difficult because all of the control is now in the hands of the panel of judges who ultimately determine my fate.
I never know what they are looking for so each show is always different but the outcome mentally should always remain the same.
No matter if I win or lose I still make up for about 1% of the population who actually can say they do what I do. I am proud to be a figure competitor.
Q: What are your future fitness plans?
Kimberly: My future plans are to compete and hopefully one day earn my pro card.
I would love to be able to help as many men and women achieve their fitness goals and live a better lifestyle. That is what I find most rewarding.
I want the world to know who I am, to do the very best I possibly can within this industry. My goals are to inspire, motivate, and make a difference.
You do only have one chance in this life so believe in yourself and make it happen.
If you believe you will achieve and live your life with no regrets. Through positive thinking anything is possible. Look at me, I’m living my dreams!
